City Manager's Message June marks the official beginning of summer, end of school year, and a time when many folks plan a vacation, or just look forward to just hanging out and relaxing with family and friends. I'd like to personally invite you to a series of special community gatherings that have become a tradition here in town, opportunities for friends and neighbors to come together and celebrate the close-knit sense of community here in Rancho Santa Margarita.
Rancho Family Fest returns to Central Park the weekend of June 9th and 10th under the enthusiastic leadership of the RSM Chamber of Commerce, who are dedicated to making this event better than ever. With lower-priced admission, craft beer and wines, a free unlimited kids' fun zone, and the addition of handmade craft shopping at the Lemon Grove Market, it is sure to be an outstanding weekend of live music and fun! We're proud to work in collaboration with Chamber members, SAMLARC, and the Rotary del Sol; make sure to stop by the City's booth and say hello to our volunteers who will have information available about the many activities and events offered throughout the summer, including our 6-week free concert series which kicks off on Sunday, July 8th. Sincerely,

Flag Day CeremonyThursday, June 14th 7:45 p.m. Civic Center Plaza The City's annual Flag Day event is a community tradition and features patriotic music and inspirational remarks. This year's event is on Thursday, June 14th at dusk on the lawn behind City Hall. We encourage you to bring lawn chairs and any worn or damaged US Flags in need of disposal. This is an opportunity to honor the American Flag in partnership with American Legion Post 862 and many local Boy and Girl Scout units.
The ceremony is held to destroy properly – by burning – worn, damaged or otherwise unserviceable American Flags in a dignified manner in accordance with The United States Flag Code which reads: "As a revered symbol of freedom and justice, the flag of the United States of America needs to be treated with the utmost respect. This respect extends to the flag's eventual retirement and destruction." Flags can be disposed of throughout the year in the flag box receptacle located in the lobby of the Bell Tower Regional Community Center to be included in the retirement ceremony.
For more information, call Community Services at (949) 216-9700.

Military SupportDonations of Baby Blankets and Diapers needed! Each time a baby is born into the 2nd Battalion, 5th Marines a baby care-package is assembled and delivered to the family. Currently, there is a need for new baby blankets for these special care packages. Over 1,000 military families live on base at Camp Pendleton, and we want them to know that the many sacrifices they make for our country are appreciated.
We are also collecting donations of diapers in all sizes to help pamper the mommies-to-be of the City’s adopted 2nd Battalion, 5th Marines. Diapers and baby wipes are expensive, costing up to $70 to $80 per month per baby. On average, a baby needs 6 to 10 diapers a day to stay fresh and healthy. As a community, we would like to show our support to the new and expectant mommies and thank them for the sacrifices they make as a military spouse. Donations may be dropped off at the Bell Tower Regional Community Center, 22232 El Paseo, Rancho Santa Margarita through Friday, August 3rd.
For more information, please contact the Community Services Department at (949) 216-9700.
