The City Council, in response to increased resident concerns about a rise in last year's crime rate, directed staff to post current data on the City's website.

The City of Rancho Santa Margarita sends crime statistics to the FBI monthly and will post them on the website as soon as they are sent. This will provide our residents and businesses a current, user-friendly picture of the trends.

"I have been telling everyone to lock their stuff because our increase in crime was largely seen in the area of thefts from unlocked vehicles," said Lt. Ron Kennedy via Nextdoor.com. "I have said this so often I am sure a few of you might even be tired of hearing it. The good news is that you HAVE been locking your stuff, and the crime rate shows that! I am only cautiously optimistic at this point, but our crime rate is trending back down for the first five months of the year."

Overall Part 1 crimes are down 17% January through May. Thefts are down 24%, mostly from a decrease in theft from unlocked vehicles.
