Street Sweeping

To keep City streets clean and increase the effectiveness of street sweeping operations, the City of Rancho Santa Margarita restricts parking in fourteen (14) areas throughout the City.

 

No parking during street sweeping restrictions applies only on streets with fixed signage indicating the days and times parking is restricted.

Street Sweeping Facts

  • Street sweeping is the primary method to remove trash, sediment, and organic materials from the roadways which keeps pollutants from local storm drains, nearby creeks, and eventually the Pacific Ocean.
  • Street sweeping is most beneficial when the street sweeper has unrestricted access to the curb.
  • Sweepers must maneuver the length of approximately four cars to service the street safely for each parked vehicle, resulting in over 40 feet of unswept street curb for each vehicle in violation.
  • Street sweepers do not sweep between 20 and 80 percent of several street segments within the City due to heavy on-street parking during street sweeping hours under the voluntary compliance program.
  • The City spends approximately $82,000 annually on street sweeping.
