Environmental Review

Determining Environmental Impact
According to state law, all development proposals within the City are analyzed to determine their environmental impacts and appropriate mitigation measures in order to maintain the quality of life in Rancho Santa Margarita. The Development Services Department and Planning Commission are responsible for reviewing projects relative to environmental concerns and compliance with the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA).

For larger projects requiring Environmental Impact Reports (EIR), the City typically contracts with private consulting firms to prepare the necessary technical studies, using funds provided by project applicants. All reports are prepared under the supervision of City staff.
